Rice Cooker for More than Rice

Post by Debra Murray

For 20 years I have been professing the magic of cooking foods other than rice in a rice cooker. My Cookbook on using a Rice Cooker sold over 100,000 copies, here is the link to the remaining copies on Amazon.

Rice Cookers make perfect rice so easy! Every rice cooker comes with a measure and for every measure of rice there is a corresponding line inside the pot to add the precise amount of liquid. For instance, if I were making 4 cups of rice I would fill the pot with water to the mark that says 4. I always rinse my rice first then add to the pot, then measure in the water. Most white rice will take about 20 minutes.

I use rice cookers for more than rice I make everything from scrambled eggs to pot roast. I love that with one push of a button it cooks and when all of the liquid evaporates it switches to keep warm. The reason I like this is I tend to multitask. Which means I can burn things or overcook them because I am not paying attention. With a rice cooker the worse thing you have to do is press the button again.

Here is the recipe for Rice Cooker Macaroni and Cheese that I have been told by very famous chefs that it is delicious!

Creamy Macaroni and Cheese
Serves 6

4 cups elbow macaroni
3 cups chicken stock
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon chicken bouillon (optional)
1 1/2 cups cream
2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
3/4 cup grated parmesan
2 tablespoons melted butter

Place macaroni, stock, salt and pepper in Rice Cooker insert; close lid and press the cook button.
When Rice Cooker switches to keep warm stir in remaining ingredients and press cook again.
Open the lid and stir the cheeses till very creamy.
Close lid and press cook again then let rest on keep warm for 15 minutes.
Invert into a large serving bowl to reveal the beautiful golden bottom.

If you are looking for a rice cooker there are various makes and models in the market place. My personal favorite is the Cooks Companion Model. I love that it is simple, has chemical free nonstick insert, and my favorite feature is the removable lid. There are a few left on ShopHQ here is the link.https://www.shophq.com/Product/481-050
